The State government has decided to purchase maize from the farmers this season on the lines of paddy procurement.
Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao today directed Minister for Agriculture Singireddy Niranjan Reddy to take immediate measures in this regard and set up purchase centres across the State.
During the current Yasangi season, maize has been cultivated on about 6.5 lakh acres across the State, and officials expect that the crop production will be around 17.37 lakh metric tons.
Maize (corn) is the second most cultivated crop in Telangana, and is grown widely in the combined Warangal, Adilabad, Nizamabad, Khammam and Karimnagar districts.
The support price for the crop has been fixed at Rs 1,962 per quintal.
