The much-hyped use of green and blue dustbins to maintain cleanliness in the city was kick-started Monday with Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao flagging off 1,005 garbage-collecting vehicles and giving away waste containers to some of the beneficiaries at People's Plaza on Necklace Road.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister accused the previous "Andhra" rulers of destroying centuries-old Hyderabad.
The City of Pearls, he said, was put to immense loss and difficulties by the Andhra rulers.
"Now we have to develop the city by taking a step towards cleanliness by giving away dustbins and trollies," he stated. "To overcome some of our perennial problems, we have discussed with all political parties and taken a decision to launch a cleanliness drive by distributing dustbins and garbage collection trollies. Efforts will be made to transform the historic Hyderabad into a world class city in the near future."
Of the two dustbins per family (being given away by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation), the green bin is meant for putting wet waste from rice and cooked vegetables, and the blue dustbin for dropping dry dust from papers and carry-bags. KCR appealed to the people to make proper use of them.
The Chief Minister also said that with the distribution of five lakh dustbins by end of this month, all the roads in the twin cities would soon appear like mirrors.
The Chief Minister also lashed out at the successive governments of the previous decades for failing to attend to the city's other problems. Among others, he expressed concern over the pathetic situation of the traffic in the city, where cars virtually felt like boats during the rainy season.
He added, "Now we also have to eradicate poverty from the city, besides addressing the chronic drinking water crisis. Two reservoirs - each of 15 TMC capacity - will be built at Ramoji Film City and Keshavapuram."
Ministers Nayani Narasimha Reddy, Talasani Srinivas Yadav, T Padma Rao Goud and Mahender Reddy, and others were present.
