Dhaya Prasad, the daughter of renowned playback singer Kalpana Raghavender, attributed the incident to an accidental overdose of insomnia medication.
Renowned playback singer Kalpana Raghavender was hospitalized yesterday after being found unconscious at her residence in Hyderabad's KPHB Colony. Initial reports suggested a possible suicide attempt; however, her daughter, Dhaya Prasad, has refuted these claims, attributing the incident to an accidental overdose of prescribed medication for insomnia.
Kalpana, known for her extensive contributions to Telugu and Malayalam cinema, has been managing a demanding schedule, pursuing both LLB and PhD degrees alongside her singing career. This rigorous routine has reportedly led to sleep disturbances.
Dhaya explained that her mother had been taking medication to manage insomnia, and that an unintentional increase in dosage had caused her to lose consciousness. She said that there were no family disputes or personal issues that could have led to such an extreme action.
The incident unfolded when Kalpana's husband, Prasad, who was in Chennai at the time, attempted to contact her around 4:30 pm yesterday. After receiving no response, he alerted the villa's association representatives, who then informed the police. Authorities arrived promptly, forced entry into the residence, and found Kalpana unconscious in her bedroom. She was immediately transported to Holistic Hospital in Nizampet for treatment.
Dr Chaitanya from Holistic Hospital reported that Kalpana was placed on ventilatory support due to fluid accumulation in her lungs and an underlying infection. "She remained on ventilation for 12 hours before it was removed," he said, adding that her condition was stable and that she was responding well to treatment.
The family has urged the public and media to refrain from spreading unfounded rumours and to respect their privacy during this time. Dhaya reassured well-wishers that her mother was recovering steadily and would be discharged soon.
For context, Kalpana Raghavender has recorded over 1,500 songs and gained further popularity through her participation in the inaugural season of Bigg Boss Telugu. The news of her hospitalization has prompted an outpouring of support from fans and colleagues in the music industry, all wishing her a swift recovery.
