The raging debate on whether or not to rename Kadapa after former chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy was put to rest after the state cabinet on Friday gave the nod for its official renaming.
The calls to rename the district as 'YS Rajasekhara Reddy District' had begun to echo soon after the demise of the former CM in a helicopter crash on September 2, 2009.
The government had indicated many times since that day that a proposal to rename the district was under consideration, but many had voiced the opinion that the 'Y S Rajasekhara Reddy Kadapa district' would be too long.
The cabinet decision reflected this opinion in its green signal to rename Kadapa as 'YSR district'.
The minister in charge of the district Galla Aruna Kumari had suggested the new name for the district, and the cabinet had given its acquiescence to the new name.
The new name will come into effect after a notification in this regard is issued.
This will most likely come around the time of YSR's birthday celebrations on 8 July 2010. The state government has already indicated that it will celebrate his birthday on a grand scale.
