For the first time in the history of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly, the hoisting of the national flag was followed by slogans of 'Jai Telangana' and not 'Jai Hind'.
The Independence Day celebrations in the Legislative Assembly premises were marred by protests by suspended TDP MLA Nagam Janardhan Reddy, who tried to hoist the Telangana flag along with the national flag.
Tension mounted when Nagam tried to reach the corridor where Assembly Speaker Nadendla Manohar was to hoist the Tricolour.
Nagam was holding a national flag, as well as the Telangana flag, in his hands. However, a police official swung into action, and snatched both the flags from Nagam's hand before he could proceed further.
Soon after the national anthem was recited, Nagam started raising Jai Telangana slogans. However, he also shouted 'Jai Bharat' once or twice, but it was 'Jai Telangana' slogans than dominated the ceremony.
Later, Nagam asked the Speaker why he was not allowing the Telangana flag to be hoisted, and complained about the Speaker having rejected their Telangana lawmakers' resignations.
Reacting to Nagam's compalint, the Speaker gave Nagam an appointment, along with 3 other MLAs, at 2pm on Tuesday, to discuss the resignation issue.
