The country, on Thursday, took up one of its biggest intiatives yet, of counting its 1.2 billion population engaging over 25 lakh officials. The President, Ms. Pratibha Patil, inaugurated the census count, her name being recorded first.
The 15th decennial Census of India will begin its Andhra Pradesh coverage on April 26, 2010, when the enumeration and details of the eight crore inhabitants of the state will be recorded and classified based on gender, religion, occupation and education. Apart from the details of radios, televisions, telephones, bicycles and motor vehicles, the census officials will also record if households have computers, internet connection, mobile phones, treated or untreated drinking water facility, and access to banking services.
The first phase of the 2011 census, called the Houselisting and Housing census, will be conducted from April 26 to June 10 in Andhra Pradesh. It includes details that will be used to build a comprehensive database for the National Population Register (NPR), which will carry specific biometric identification details and photographs of 120+ crore Indians including a special identification number. The second phase, called the Population Enumeration phase, will be held throughout the country from February 9-28, 2011, and the count of every individual without omission or duplication will be carried out.
