The strike called by the GHMC's garbage disposal workers entered its seventh day today, causing hardship to the citizens with garbage piling up on roads and streets.
Some 42,000 workers are on strike for achievement of their demands, primarily a wage hike. And the twin cities are enveloped in stench due to the overflowing refuse everywhere.
The GHMC workers are not allowing anyone else to do the work, either. In fact, the striking municipal employees prevented even police personnel who were trying to clear the garbage at Charminar, leading to mild tension in the area and forcing the police to take them into preventive custody.
With the talks between the government and the striking workers failing as recently as yesterday, people are expressing fears that the piling up of the garbage may lead to various diseases if it were to rain.
The GHMC workers' union leaders said they would call off the strike if the state government gave it in writing that it would concede to their demands. (NSS)
