Acting on a tip-off that four persons travelling to Hyderabad by road along the Bengaluru-Hyderabad Highway were carrying smuggled gold of foreign origin, sleuths of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence intercepted the gang on Monday and seized 3.1 kg of gold worth over Rs 1.38 crore from them.
The officials mounted vigil at the Raikal toll plaza at Chilkamari on the city's outskirts and first caught a person travelling on a private bus. Later, three more persons, who were traveling in a cab, were also nabbed.
The suspects were found carrying 31 pieces of gold bars of 999 purity weighing 3,099 grams. They were carrying the gold without any valid documents.
In their statements, the four admitted that the gold was being smuggled for money.
