The High Court has asked TV channels to stop telecasting violent and provocative crime shows on television. A writ petition was filed by a practising advocate VVSS Kameswar Rao, who complained that these shows and visuals were terrorizing viewers.
The petition made Telugu news channels (including TV9, ETV and TV5) as respondents. Rao said telecasting visuals of bodies in road accidents violates Article 19 of the Constitution and the Cable TV Network Rule 6 of 1994.
Justice Gopalakrishna Tamada on Friday issued an interim order in which he asked Telugu news channels to stop telecasting them.
Visuals of crime, men and women caught in compromising positions, violence against women and children, dead bodies, people destroying public or private property, people committing suicide, and provocative and instigative speeches, were covered in the interim order. The order also includes content in scrolls. Crime Watch, Neralu Ghoralu and Crime And Punishment are among the shows that will be specifically affected.
