Hyderabad | 28th July 2017
The Rachakonda Cyber Cell raided a fake call centre at Motinagar of Delhi for duping a retired employee in the name of insurance incentives.

The police arrested eight accused, including a woman.

According to Dr Tarun Joshi, IPS, Joint Commissioner of Police, Rachakonda Police Commissionerate, on June 13 of this year, the victim, a retired central government employee, lodged a complaint. It stated that while he was in service he used to pay for an insurance policy and for some reasons discontinued the policy. In January this year, he received a call purported to be from GBIC (Governing Body of Insurance Council), Delhi, that he had been awarded an incentive of Rs 6.3 lakhs, and needed to deposit Rs 20,000 as a security deposit for getting his incentives.

Believing the caller, the victim deposited the amount in the bank account given by the caller.

After two days, he received another call to deposit a further Rs 85,300, which was stated to be refundable.

The fraudsters continued luring the victim thus, saying that he would get a total Rs 70,00,000 as incentive and making him deposit a total Rs 42,00,000.

Since the demands of the fraudsters were increasing continuously, the victim got suspicious and lodged a complaint with the Cyber Cell in Rachakonda.

During the investigation, information relating to the holders of the account into which the victim deposited the money was collected, and the call centre from where the accused were trapping the victims identified.

On July 24, a police team raided the fake call centre run by the accused in a rented office space situated in a penthouse in Motinagar area of Delhi.

The police were surprised to note that a full-fledged call centre was being run by the accused with 12 girls and 12 boys working.

The accused confessed to their roles in working with the fake call centre at the behest of two more accused, who are at large.

The arrested accused were produced before the Tis Hazari court and brought to Hyderabad on a transit warrant.

The case is being investigated.
