Many parts of Hyderabad, especially in the Old City, observed a bandh on Tuesday in protest against the
judicial remand of MIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi in a 2005 case.
Almost all shops, business establishments and educational institutions remained closed in the Old City and other Muslim-concentrated areas of the new city, including Nampally, Bazarghat, Asifnagar, Mehdipatnam, Tolichowki, First Lancer, Tappachabutra and parts of Banjara Hills.
The markets around the Charminar wore a deserted look. The traffic on the main roads leading towards the Old City was thin till late noon. The Road Transport Corporation had suspended many of its bus services, while auto-rickshaws, too, were off the roads.
With some broadband service providers supporting the bandh, several areas in the Old City had no access to the Internet either.
Several towns in Telangana, too, observed a bandh, although there, it had a relatively lesser impact on normal life.
Meanwhile, elaborate security arrangements were made by the police to ensure peace and for the maintenance of law and order. Patrolling was intensified in all areas, while pickets were deployed at sensitive locations. (INN)
