Thanks to incessant rains for the past three days in Hyderabad, which paused just this morning, the Hussain Sagar lake has received a lot of water, and has crossed its full tank level.
The current water level of the lake is at 514.75 metres as against the full capacity of 513.45 metres. As a result, the authorities concerned are releasing waters to downstream areas.
The authorities evacuated the people of the low-lying areas first.
The twin reservoirs of the city - Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar - on the outskirts are also receiving huge inflows of the flood water. In this context, the two gates of the Himayat Sagar are being lifted by two feet and water is being released to the downstream areas. The officials said that 700 cusecs of water were being released downstream through these two gates.
The MD of HMWS&SB Dana Kishore, the Ranga Reddy district Collector and several other officials participated in the gate-lifting ceremony.
With the lifting of the gates of the Himayat Sagar, the Musi river flow is going to increase. As a result, the authorities have evacuated the people of the Musi catchment and low-lying areas.
Meanwhile, the meteorological department has warned of heavy rains in the GHMC limits again in the next 24 hours. In the wake of the forecast, officials have advised people not to come out of their homes. The GHMC has also set up helpline numbers for complaints on issues such as floods and falling of trees: 040-21111111 and 9000113667.
