2007 Blasts: Bail Of Accused Cancelled
The NIA had contended that granting bail to the accused would affect the investigations into the blasts at Malegaon and Ajmer.
Hyderabad | 18th April 2013
A division bench of the Andhra Pradesh High Court on Thursday set aside the bail granted by a lower court to Mecca Masjid blast accused Lokendra Sharma and Devender Gupta.
The division bench, comprising Justice K C Bhanu and Justice Ramachandra Rao, issued the orders, following a petition filed by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which raised apprehensions that bail to the accused would hamper the investigation.
The NIA contended that granting bail to the accused, who are former members of RSS, will affect the investigations into the blasts at Malegaon and Ajmer and inside Samjhauta Express.
The accused, who are activists of Abhinav Bharat, were granted bail by the IV Additional Metropolitan Sessions Court on November 27, 2012. However, on December 4, 2012, the High Court suspended the bail, which was cancelled on Thursday.
Sharma and Gupta are among the six accused arrested by the NIA in the case. The other accused who are currently in judicial custody are Swamy Aseemanand, Bharat Mohanlal Rateshwar alias Bharat Bhai, Tejaram and Rajender Choudhary alias Samundar.
Two others, Sandeep V Dange and Ramchandra Kalsangra, are still absconding.
As many as nine people were killed, and over 60 injured, in the powerful bomb blast that took place during Friday prayers on May 18, 2007. (INN)
