A 3-year-old girl named Kavya, from Guntur, has contracted the HIV virus reportedly due to negligence on part of a hospital named Shri Ramachandra Children's And Dental Hospital.
According to her father Mallikarjuna, his daughter Kavya had started experiencing problems with breathing, and had to be shifted to a hospital. Her doctor had said that the problem was because of a shortage of blood, and had prescribed blood transfusion. He suggested that they get the blood from Needs Blood Bank, which the parents did.
However, the child started experiencing even more weakness a few days after the transfusion. A blood test revealed that the girl has HIV. When the doctors said that the only way the Kavya could have gotten the virus is through the parents, Mallikarjuna and his wife got themselves tested for the virus, and were found to be HIV negative. The only other medium for the virus, they said would have to be through the blood transfusion. They accused the doctors of not having bothered to check the blood for disease.
When the hospital refused to take the responsibility of even conducting an enquiry, the parents went to the Collector Suresh Kumar with the complaint. A complaint has been registered at a nearby police station as well, and an enquiry is underway.
