Taking a serious note on the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal Award on sharing of waters, Minister of Law and Courts Erasu Prathap Reddy on Sunday stated that the state government would file a petition seeking review of the verdict.
Talking to media persons after participating in a program at Nandyala, the Minister said Andhra Pradesh had suffered a huge injustice through the award given by the tribunal over sharing of Krishna river waters.
Prathap Reddy said that the reduction in the share of surplus water would adversely affect several irrigation projects in the state, particularly in the Krishna Delta.
He said that the government would file a writ petition to protect the interests of the state after thoroughly studying the tribunal award.
The minister also expressed serious concern over the tribunal's permission to Karnataka to raise the height of Alamatti dam from 519 to 524.25 metres.
Prathap Reddy stated that the permission given by the tribunal to Karnataka to raise the height of the Almatti dam would affect Kharif crop in over 13.5 lakh acres in fertile Krishna Delta, considered the ‘rice-bowl’ of the state.
He accused the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) of being negligent during its rule, leading to the Karnataka government starting work on the Almatti dam. He said that if the TDP had acted responsibly during its tenure, the present crisis could have been avoided.
