After introducing a subsidized meal for Rs 5, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation is gearing up to launch yet another novel scheme, of breakfast for Rs 1.
Speaking to media persons after visiting the subsidized meal centre at Nampally Sarai, GHMC Mayor Mohammad Majid Hussain said that 2-3 different items like idli, vada and upma would be offered for breakfast at a price of Rs 1.
He said that a team of officials had been constituted to finalise the scheme.
However, he said that the scheme would be launched after extending the ongoing Rs 5 per meal scheme to all the 50 centres across the GHMC. Currently, the scheme is being implemented at 8 centres in Hyderabad, and will be extended from July 1.
The Mayor said that locations like railway and bus stations had been identified to run the scheme, as many poor people gathered at those places. He said that the food schemes would directly benefit the poor and hungry, and would not cause any burden to the GHMC.
He said that against the GHMC's budget of Rs 4,599 crores, only Rs 11 crores were being spent for the subsidized meal scheme, which directly benefitted more than 15,000 people on all 365 days.
