The GHMC's treasury swelled up to Rs. 21 crores in taxes with the demonetised 500 and 1,000 currency notes in two days after the Telangana government declared that the people could pay their taxes with old currency for the time being.
As per reports, while the municipal body collected a whopping Rs. 21 crores on Friday, the HMWSSB fetched Rs. 9 crores through special counters opened for collecting tax arrears. It is likely that total amount may cross the 50-crore mark by the stroke of midnight as people are preferring to pay with old currency notes.
Thanks to the Centre for giving permission to the civic body when Municipal Administration Minister K T Rama Rao made an appeal during his Delhi trip.
Confused over not easily getting their old currency notes exchanged and could not take money from ATMs which were not having sufficient money, the people are finding it easy to relieve off their old notes by paying taxes. The appeal made by GHMC Mayor B Rammohan and Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy started yielding positive result of getting them huge funds in the form of taxes in 24 circles.
In a couple of days or so, the people under GHMC limits are likely to pay taxes at Mee-Seva centers. Special counters and other civic service centers will remain open on Saturday and Sunday, too.
People were seen standing in long queues at these centers to pay taxes.
The Minister asked the officials to work extra hours as the people were willing to pay taxes.
