GHMC Commissioner Somesh Kumar has strictly directed hoteliers not to keep their Haleem "batties" on the top floors keeping in view the tragic incident that occurred at City Light Hotel last year which took 18 precious lives.

The Commissioner held a review meeting with all the hoteliers in the GHMC limits who are in involved in making Haleem in connection with the holy season of Ramzan, in the Pawnar Hall of the GHMC headquarters, on Thursday. He directed them to set up their kitchen establishments on their ground floors only.

He further instructed them to put up at least one fire extinguisher as a precautionary measure to handle any untoward incidents.

Somesh Kumar warned the hoteliers against keeping their haleem batties on the roadside and occupying the footpaths for eating and parking. He also directed the hoteliers not to throw waste materials on the roads, and place them in bags and utilize the services of the bulk garbage system, or hand over the waste material to the GHMC sanitation workers.

Some of the hoteliers informed the Commissioner that lot of amount was being spent for diesel etc. for the generators due to power cuts, and requested him to look into the power cuts and also the harassment from the police to close the hotels by 11pm sharp in some of the outskirts.

Responding to their plea, the Commissioner assured that he would coordinate with the electricity officials and the police department, and the necessary orders would be issued very shortly.

The Commissioner informed that the GHMC was planning to conduct a competition for the best Haleem preparors during Ramzan, and factors such as hygiene, quality and sanitation of the area would be taken into consideration for determining the winner. He requested the hoteliers to maintain quality and hygiene, and to take all the precautionary measures well in advance to avoid any inconvenience to the citizens.

Kumar also requested the hoteliers to procure meat only from authorized GHMC slaughter houses and not from other sources, and to prepare the Haleem much better than in the previous years.

The hoteliers thanked the Commissioner for sparing the time and giving good suggestions, and assured the Commissioner that all precautionary measures would be taken, and that if any problems arose they would contact the concerned officials for helping them. (INN)
