29-year-old Indian shooter Gagan Narang, on Monday, won the bronze medal in the 10-meter Air Rifle event at the 2012 Olympics being held in London. This is India's first medal in the London Olympics, and also its third shooting medal in Olympic history.
After scoring 498 in the qualifying round, Narang scored 103.1 in a rather tense final round, finishing with an aggregate score of 701.1. He was pretty close to winning the silver medal at one point of time. Meanwhile, silver medallist Niccolo Campriani of Italy scored 701.5, and gold medallist Alin George Moldoveanu of Romania scored 702.1.
Gagan Narang's colleague Abhinav Bindra, however, did not qualify for the finals - he finished only 16th in the qualification round. Bindra had won gold for India in the 2008 Olympics.
The first time the Hyderabad-based Gagan Narang made his presence felt was in 2003, when he won the gold at the Afro-Asian Games. He then went on break records, win the gpld at the World Cup in 2006 and 2008, and also win 4 gold medals at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi. He also won a silver at the 2012 Asian Games. In 2010, he was awarded the Padmasri.
