Students affiliated to the Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (APVP) on Wednesday staged a dharna in front of the residence of Minister for Medical Education P Sudarshan Reddy, demanding the immediate release of funds for the clearance of arrears of tuition fees for reserved category students in private engineering colleges.
Raising slogans against the government, the ABVP leaders tried to barge into the Minister's residence, but they were turned away by the lathis wielded by the policemen present there.
The police took a few of the students into custody, while the rest managed to disperse.
Talking to media persons, the student leaders alleged that the government was playing with the lives of students by not releasing tuition fees and scholarship dues, and forcing the students to end their lives. The government was also harming the bright careers of the students, the leaders said.
The ABVP leaders threatened to intensify their agitation if the government failed to release arrears of fees to college managements in the budget session of the Assembly.
