Demanding additional relief package for the distressed farmers in the state, a delegation of Congress MPs on Wednesday met party President Sonia Gandhi under the leadership of Union Minister For Urban Development S Jaipal Reddy.
The MPs brought the condition of rain-hit farmers to the notice of Sonia Gandhi, and urged her to request Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to release more relief for the farmers.
Talking to media persons later, Jaipal Reddy said that Sonia Gandhi gave a patient hearing to the MPs delegation, and assured to talk to Prime Minister over the farmers issue. She also assured the delegation that the centre would give better financial package for the rain-hit farmers in the state.
The MPs urged Sonia Gandhi to make efforts for procuring rain-soaked paddy with Minimum Support Price assurance.
They also urged her to seek the lifting of restrictions for exporting rice to other states to get remunerative price.
Jaipal Reddy said that the government would make an announcement on the liberal relief package for farmers within 2 days.
