The Leader of the Opposition in the Telangana Legislative Council Mohammed Ali Shabbir has accused former GHMC mayor Mohammed Majid Hussain of "disowning" one of his daughters to contest the GHMC elections (on an MIM ticket from the Mehdipatnam ward).
Only people with two or fewer children can contest the elections, and Majid Hussain apparently has three daughters.
Shabbir Ali, along with Congress candidate Mohammed Khaliq Irfan, undertook a door-to-door campaign and addressed street corner meetings in several localities of the Mehdipatnam ward on Saturday. Addressing a meeting at Zeba Bagh, Shabbir Ali said that it was highly regrettable that Majid Hussain disowned one of his daughters to contest the elections.
He said that disowning one's own child was not only against the Constitution, but also against Islam, and that Islam and Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) strictly spoke against one disowning his own children.
"He had served as the GHMC Mayor for almost three years. He should have set a precedent by refusing to contest the election for having three children. However, he tried to cheat everyone by hiding one of his daughters. The birth certificates clearly state that Majid Hussain and Syeda Juveria Azamath are the parents of three children. If they are not the parents, then who are parents of third girl named Ayesha Haala?" he asked.
The Congress leader also listed out the failures of the MIM in ensuring the upliftment of Muslims. He said that the MIM leaders had turned rich, but their voters remained poor and downtrodden.
He alleged that none of the areas represented by the MIM corporators had proper basic amenities.
"They visit these areas once in five years and seek your vote in the name of Islam. You must reject everyone who seeks vote in the name of religion. Congress binds people of all religions, castes and communities. We seek votes only in the name of development and performance," he said.
Shabbir Ali also claimed that the previous Congress regime had developed Hyderabad by spending over Rs. 1 lakh crores, but the pace of development had stopped after the TRS came to power.
He also took a dig at TRS manifesto wherein minorities were promised 1,000 auto-rickshaws. "The Congress provided 4% reservation and turned poor Muslim youth into engineers, doctors and qualified professionals. But the TRS government wants Muslims to become auto-drivers," he said, adding that the community would agree for nothing less than the 12% reservation that was promised by Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao in the 2014 election manifesto of the TRS.
Congress senior leaders Vinod, Kondal, Md Afzaluddin, Murali, Jabir Patel, Ateeq Siddiqui and others were also present. They were given a warm reception by the local residents, and many of them joined the padayatra which lasted over four hours.
The Congress leaders also called upon Syed Viqaruddin, the Editor-in-Chief of Rahnuma-e-Deccan, at his residence, and sought his blessings for the victory of the candidate Mohammed Khaliq Irfan.
