Several CPI leaders and farmers were taken into custody on Thursday, when they tried to move towards Secretariat as part of their "Chalo Secretariat" protest against the government's anti-farmers' policies.
Farmers, led by CPI leaders, organized a rally from Maqdoom Bhavan in support of peasants. However, their attempt to reach Secretariat was foiled by the police personnel who were present there in huge numbers. Police took the CPI leaders and farmers into preventive custody, and shifted them to a nearby police station.
Earlier, talking to media persons, AP Rythu Sangham State Unit Present K Ramakrishna slammed the government for not responding to farmers' problems.
"Farmers have been facing several problems due to a lack of supply of fertilizers and seeds on subsidy. The government has even failed to supply adequate power to farmers," he said.
Calling the Congress government anti-farmer, Ramakrishna alleged that the government has turned blind eye towards the plight of farmers despite repeated representations made by them. (INN)
