Congress members of the GHMC's standing committee have expressed concern over the delay in Mayor Mohammad Majid Hussain's convening of the GHMC council's meeting.
The Congress members, along with deputy mayor G Rajkumar, on Tuesday, called on Labour Minister and Greater Hyderabad Congress Committee president Danam Nagender at the latter's residence in Banjara Hills.
According to sources, besides discussing the GHMC council's meeting, they also discussed steps to stop the exodus of Congress corporators to the YSR Congress party.
During the discussions, the Congress members said that it was compulsory for the Mayor to convene the meeting before February 10 to pass the budget. If an ordinary general body meeting cannot be convened, it is mandatory for him to hold a special session to pass the GHMC's budget, which has already been approved by the Standing Committee, they said.
The Congress members were of the view that it might not be possible for the Mayor to prevent Langar Houz BJP corporator C Uday Kumar from taking his oath. As per the GHMC's rules, a corporator will be disqualified if he fails to take the oath within 90 days after he/she is declared elected. Following the court's order, Uday Kumar was declared elected on December 12, and to prevent him from taking oath, the GHMC council's meeting should be delayed till March. However, since the budget needs to be passed by February 10, the Mayor would be bound to convene an ordinary or a special budget session before the deadline.
Danam reportedly discussed the exodus of Congress corporators to the YSRCP. Following reports that eight to 10 Congress corporators might switch loyalties, he reportedly assigned the responsibility of convincing those corporators to stay with the ruling party to certain party leaders. (INN)
