Tensions flared at the Teegal Pahad polling station in Naspur municipality, Mancherial district, today as workers of the ruling Congress and opposition BJP clashed during the graduate MLC seat elections, disrupting the voting process.
Polling for the elections began at 8 am, and while some areas witnessed a peaceful process others saw heated exchanges. A verbal altercation between some BJP and Congress cadres at the Mancherial polling station soon escalated, leading to stone-pelting between the rival groups. The confrontation turned violent after BJP activists alleged that a local Sub-Inspector had manhandled their leader. In response, BJP workers staged a protest, which soon spiraled into a physical clash with Congress workers.
Amid the escalating tension, the police intervened to break up the confrontation and restore order. Ramagundam Police Commissioner Srinivas rushed to the scene to assess the situation and ensure no further disruptions. Security was reinforced at the polling station to prevent any further violence.
Both the Congress and BJP have treated this election as a prestige battle, with large contingents of party workers deployed at polling booths from the early hours. With the high stakes involved, law enforcement remains on high alert to prevent further incidents as polling continues.
