In an incident which has set alarm bells ringing and exposed the chinks in the security network at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SHAR), Nellore district, computers containing valuable information on wind radar systems were stolen on Monday.
According to officials, the computers were used to calculate weather patterns before launching rockets into space.
The value of these computers is believed to be around Rs. 4 lakhs. Though there is no official word on this yet, the information on the computers is considered important but not sensitive.
According to sources, the thieves managed to bypass the internal security network and get away with the computers.
Officials who noticed the theft in the administrative office lodged a complaint with the police. The Sriharikota police suspect the hand of some insiders in the theft.
Gudur Deputy Superintendent of Police K Narayana Reddy stated that no arrests have been made in this connection so far.
