Communal tension took hold of Old City on Monday night, when people of two communities gathered in groups to pelt stones at each other in Karwan and in Kulsumpura. 15 shops were set ablaze, and two religious places targeted.
Accoring to the police, it all started in ziyaguda when people from one community set ablaze flags of the other community in retaliation to a similar incident that took place two days back in the same area. People belonging to both communities soon gathered in throngs and started throwing stones at each other. The atmosphere quickly spread to the nearby areas of Karwan and Tappachabutra.
The police had to resort to lathicharge to break up the mob, followed by an imposition of section 144 in the area. All police personnel in the West Zone have been shifted to sensitive areas, along with the Task Force and the Rapid Action Force. Police in Musheerabad and the South Zone have been put on high alert.
