The Centre has released the first instalment of Rs 7.5 crore for the construction of two hostels (one each for boys and girls) in the Osmania University.
Recently, during a visit to the university, union minister G Kishan Reddy was said to be disturbed to see the issues being faced by the students due to poor maintenance of the hostels.
He immediately spoke to the university's VC and higher authorities about the problems. Later, he also spoke to Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Virendra Kumar and apprised him of the situation, and also explained the necessity for the construction of new hostel buildings in the OU.
He also wrote letters to the union minister on the issue.
Kumar then came forward to construct one hostel for girls and one for boys with a capacity of 250 students each, to accommodate a total of 500 students, under the Babu Jagjivan Ram Chhatrawas Yojana and under the Pradhan Mantri Anushhit Jati Abhyuday Yojana schemes.
These hostels, which will be constructed with 100% union government funds, will cost Rs 14.6 crore each.
Kishan Reddy thanked Kumar, and said that he would work hard to make these two new hostels available to the SC students studying in the university.
He also said that apart from granting timely scholarships to the SC students, the Narendra Modi government would continue to provide support for their empowerment by keeping in mind their every need such as skill development training and employment after the completion of their education.
