Reacting to the reports of
paddy grains being drenched by unseasonal rains in the Telangana regions, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) President N Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday held the state government responsible for the plight of the farmers.
He charged that the incompetance of the government was what caused the acute shortage of storage space at the grain purchase centres across the state.
Farmers have had to leave their paddy grains in heaps outside the purchase centres, exposed to nature, due to the
non-availability of sufficient gunny bags. Sturdy plastic grain covers were also not available, and the farmers have been unable to protect their produce from the rains.
Insisting that the paddy grains were the responsibility of the market yard once they were deposited there by the farmers, Naidu demanded that the government purchase the drenched paddy at rates not lower than the Minimum Support Price (MSP).
The TDP chief also opined that it was not morally right for the government to conduct the Raitu Chaitanya Yatra before fulfilling its promise of helping the farmers out of their miseries.
Having concluded the touring of the market yards in all the Telangana districts, Chandrababu announced that the TDP would conduct rasta rokos across the region on Thursday to highlight the plight of the farmers.
