The alleged statement of Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president Revanth Reddy, who reportedly said that the 24-hour power supply to the farming sector was not required, evoked strong criticism from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) today.
The ruling party has called for a two-day state-wide protest against the Congress for "its stance against 24-hour free electricity provided to farmers".
BRS working president and Teangana minister K T Rama Rao said that the purported statement of Reddy was "anti-farmer", and appealed to his party cadre to express their resentment in every village by burning effigies of the Congress across the State.
Rao also said, "In the past, too, the Congress had harassed farmers by not providing electricity. Now too they want to trouble farmers. This should be severely condemned by the farmers of the State."
Meanwhile, ministers, elected representatives of the BRS and other BRS leaders strongly condemned Revanth Reddy's purported statement, saying that his remarks exposed the Congress party's "anti-farmer" policies.
Speaking at a press conference, Minister Jagadish Reddy along with MP Badugula Lingaiah Yadav, Government Whip Gongidi Sunitha, and MLAs Gadari Kishore, Kusukuntla Prabhakar Reddy, Paila Shekhar Reddy, Bollam Mallaiah Yadav and Ravindra Nayak, said that the Congress had never worked for the welfare of the farmers, and had always adopted anti-farmer policies.
He appealed to the farmers not to support the party, and teach a fitting lesson to it in the upcoming Assembly election.
"Even though it is expensive for the State government to supply 24 hours power to the agriculture sector, Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao has taken a strong decision in favour of the farmers and is providing free power to agriculture pumpsets, adequate fertilizers and other incentives to farmers. But the TPCC president is unable to digest the happiness of farmers, and has made derogatory remarks against farmers," Jagadish Reddy claimed.
"Farmers are the backbone of the economy. But Revanth Reddy is nursing a grudge against the farmers and insulting the agriculture sector," the minister said.
Ministers Harish Rao, Niranjan Reddy, Indrakaran Reddy, Vemula Prashanth Reddy, Errabelli Dayakar Rao and Talasani Srinivas Yadav also condemned Revanth Reddy's alleged remarks.
