A powerful blast rocked Varanasi's Sheetla ghat during an ongoing Ganga arati at 6.30 pm today, injuring more than 20 people.
The blast is believed to have been triggered by an IED planted in a milk container.
Given the kind of explosives used and the manner in which it targetted a certain community, the blast is being suspected to be a terror attack.
The Pakistan-based terrorist group Indian Mujahideen's name is doing the rounds as the perpetrator of the crime as they have set off bomb blasts in Varanasi earlier.
Sheetla ghat is situated near Dasaswamedh ghat, the largest ghat in Varanasi. Hundreds of devotees flock here to offer their tributes to the holy river, Ganga, and being a Tuesday, the crowd was much higher today. The blast also led to a stampede at the ghat.
All the injured have been rushed to local hospitals.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has confirmed the blast and asked the DGP of Uttar Pradesh to provide a full report. High alert has been already sounded at Varanasi.

Chidambaram has made other Indian intelligence agencies branches of the United States intelligence agencies, on the pretext of fighting terrorism, bringing in U.S. equipment to India to enable comprehensive real-time monitoring and interception ability for the U.S. of all communications in India, a comprehensive and total censorship power to the United States of not only what gets into the Indian media of all kinds but even communications between individuals, bringing India into a colonial grip of and slavery to the United States such as has never been seen in human history.
