The police today arrested Telangana BJP leaders and scores of party workers, including women, when they tried to march towards the Assembly as part of a "Chalo Assembly" program called for by BJYM.
The Telangana BJP Youth Morcha had given the "Chalo Assembly" call in protest against the TRS government's move to provide 12% reservation to Muslims.
The police stopped the BJP activists near the Basheerbagh flyover and took them into preventive custody.
BJP floor leader G Kishan Reddy, MLAs Ramachandra Reddy and N V S S Prabhakar, and former MLA Nagam Janardhan Reddy were among those who were taken into custody by the police.
Earlier, talking to the media, Telangana BJP chief Dr K Laxman and G Kishan Reddy, who had squatted on the road, alleged that the TRS government was indulging in vote-bank politics. They also said that by introducing 12% reservation for Muslims the government was doing great injustice to BCs, and that religion-based reservations were unconstitutional.
Laxman said that his party had been organizing protests peacefully for the last one month against the state government's move, but to no avail, leading to it deciding to put more pressure on the government through the Chalo Assembly. He alleged that now thousands of party workers across the State had been taken into custody while they were on their way to the capital to participate in the Chalo Assembly protest.
The BJP chief also strongly condemned the suspension of his party's MLAs from the Assembly. He said that the party would try to galvanize the people to protest against the policies of the government.
