IAS officer B P Acharya was arrested by the CBI for his alleged role in irregularities the sale of villas and apartments in Emaar Township.
The Special CBI Court, on Monday, gave the CBI 2-day custody of IAS officer B P Acharya, in the Emaar scam.
Earlier in the day, Acharya was arrested by the CBI for his alleged role in irregularities in land transfer and sale of villas and apartments in Emaar Township.
Acharya, an IAS officer of the 1983 batch cadre, has been named as the prime accused in the multi-crore scam.
The Principal Secretary for Home, Acharya, was called for questioning at the CBI office, and was later taken into custody.
Later, he was produced before the CBI Court, which remanded him to 2-day CBI custody for further interrogation. The court asked the probing agency to produce him again on 1 February by 4 pm.
Meanwhile, Acharya has also moved a bail petition in the court, seeking release on the grounds of health. However, the court has posted the hearing on bail petition to 1 February.
Meanwhile, the court has also extended the judicial remand of 2 other accused - Sunil Reddy and Vijaya Raghavan - till 1 February.
The CBI, on 17 August, registered a case against Acharya and a real estate developer on instructions of the state High Court, under sections 120 (B), 13/2, 13/1/C, 409, 420, 477 (A) of the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The case relates to alleged dilution of APIIC equity from 49% to 26% in the land development project in Manikonda, which was being developed jointly by the Dubai-based Emaar.
It has also been alleged that villas and apartments were shown underpriced in the documents, causing losses to the exchequer.
Earlier, the CBI also arrested famous industrialist Koneru Prasad in this case.
Acharya is the second serving IAS officer, after Y Srilakhsmi, to be arrested on charges of corruption and irregularities.
Srilaksmi, who was arrested in the Obulapuram Mining Corporation, is currently lodged in Chanchalguda Women's Jail. (INN)
