Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy has congratulated the Andhra Pradesh State Literacy Mission Authority (SLMA) on getting three national level awards for its work in the state.
The Authority has received awards for its work in Vizianagaram district, and one gram panchayat P Yeleru of Anantapur district.
Andhra Pradesh is the only state in the country to have received the Saakshar Bharat Award. The awards - comprising a trophy and a certificate - will be given by the Vice-President of India, Hamid Ansari, on the occasion of International Literacy Day celebrations on September 8, at Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh.
The National Literacy Mission Authority instituted the Saakshar Bharat Awards to encourage institutions working in the field of literacy and skill development. The awards are presented every year, on International Literacy Day, on the 8th of September.
In Andhra Pradesh, the Saakshar Bharat program is being implemented in 19 districts, where female literacy is less than 50%. The overall literacy rate of Andhra Pradesh is 67.44% as per the 2011 census. Authorities say that so far, 37 lakh nonliterates have been enrolled, and about 33 lakh nonliterates made literate, as part of this program. Thus, the literacy rate among adults in the state will eventually be around 72%, which is nearer the national average, say officials. (INN)
