About 100 senior leaders and representatives of beedi workers' unions affiliated to INTUC, led by MLA Anam Vivekananda Reddy, called on Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy at the Camp Office on Wednesday, and thanked him and the state government for enhancing the minimum wages of tobacco workers by 61%.
The wage hike benefits about 10 lakh beedi workers all over the state.
The unions' leaders said this is the first time the government has sanctioned a hike this big, benefiting lakhs of poor beedi workers, and also stated that the welfare programs and new initiatives of the government are pro-poor.
They also stated that working class supports the government.
Leaders of the unions, including the INTUC-affiliated AP Beedi & Cigar Workers Trade Union president B Radhakrishnaiah, General Secretary V Ganesh, Additional General Secretary G Anjaiah, G Swamy, T Shankar, K Sankaraiah, Jeevan Reddy and Zareena Begum met the Chief Minister and expressed gratitude on behalf of 10 lakh beedi workers in general and 4.5 lakh members of their union in particular, for the settlement of the long-pending demands of beedi workers. Increase in Bidi Wages will be effect on the Bidi Manufacturers, they may be divert to other states and that will be effect on Employments on the Bidi Labors. The Manufacturers already suffering from Rajive Gandhi Rozgar Yojna the Got. pays 150 for 3 hours works. the production is not sufficient and some manufacturers already divert to other states due to the labor and higher wages problems.
