Perhaps attracted by the double bedroom scheme launched by his Telangana counterpart K Chandrashekar Rao, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu today announced a double bedroom housing scheme for the poor people of his own State, christened "NTR Housing Scheme".
He launched the scheme on the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of B R Ambedkar at Jakkampudi in the Krishna district, and laid the foundation stone for the construction of 10,000 houses under the scheme. Recalling that the late NTR had originally initiated efforts for the construction of houses for the poor decades back, the Chief Minister said that his government had decided to take the same initiative forward by constructing six lakh houses for the poor in the State, for which Rs 16,000 crores were needed.
Naidu said that the houses constructed during the Congress rule were sub-standard and not fit for living. He also alleged that the Congress leaders had indulged in irregularities and corruption during the construction of those houses - he said that though Rs. 42,000 crores had been sanctioned for the housing scheme during the ten-year rule of the Congress, they had spent only Rs. 12,000 crores.
In his speech Naidu also lauded the services of Ambedkar, who he said had fought hard for the removal of economic disparities.
Ministers Mrinalini, Devineni Umamaheshwar Rao, Kollu Ravindra and Kesineni Nani, MLA Bonda Uma and others attended the function.
