8 Lakh Additional Compensation In Tubectomy Death
The Telangana Human Rights Commission held the government liable for the death in 2018, and awarded higher compensation and a job to the husband of the woman.
The Telangana Human Rights Commission (TGHRC) has held the State government liable for the death of a woman following a tubectomy procedure at a government hospital.
The incident occurred at a Government Community Health Centre in Wanaparthy district in 2018.
In a case registered in the same year, the Commission, headed by Justice Shameem Akther, found that M Lalitha had died due to complications arising from an "ileal perforation during surgery" and a "delay in diagnosis", which resulted in septic peritonitis and cardiopulmonary arrest.
Rejecting the State's contention that the death was due to unavoidable physiological complications, the Commission concluded that the case amounted to clear medical negligence.
Noting that the Rs 2 lakh compensation earlier paid by the government was wholly inadequate - particularly as the deceased was survived by a disabled husband and two minor children - the TGHRC recommended the payment of an additional Rs 8 lakh as compensation.
The Commission also advised the State government to provide suitable employment to the husband, enabling the family to live with dignity and financial security.
