The charismatic Marxist student leader of Osmania University, George Reddy, was murdered on the campus on April 14, 1972.
Reddy was said to be a brilliant student, pursuing a doctoral thesis in physics. He is documented as a progressive, iconic and inspiring student leader fighting for a just and equitable world, who fought valiantly against communal forces and was finally killed by hired goons.
Friends and followers of Reddy have been organizing events on April 14 every year to commemorate his memory, and have planned something more elaborate for his 50th death anniversary this year.
There will be an educational morning walk from the OU Arts College starting 6 am, including visits to the sports areas Reddy frequented, and ending at the hostel where he was murdered.
On April 14 at 5:30 pm, a public meeting will be held at the Sundarayya Vignana Kendram, Bagh Lingampally. Bezawada Wilson of Safai Karmachari Union, a winner of the Magsaysay Award, will deliver the keynote speech, and associates of George Reddy will also speak. There will also be cultural events.
