Citizens will have to shell out more money for auto rickshaw fares soon, after Transport Commissioner L Premachandra Reddy buckled in to the demands by Auto Unions and assured them of a hike in the existing auto fares.
According to Auto Parirakshana Porata president Amanullah Khan, the fare hike would be 'reasonable'.
Khan told media persons that the Union had approached the Transport Commissioner with the demand of a hike in the auto fares following the recent steep hike in petrol prices.
The auto union leader also said that they had submitted a memorandum to the Transport Commissioner in which they said it has been over 2 years since the auto rickshaw fares were revised from the existing of Rs. 12 minimum and Rs. 7 per km.
Khan also cited the example of Bangalore city where the fares are already fixed at Rs. 17 minimum and Rs. 9 per km.
The Memorandum also demanded that the green tax exemption be enforced and the tax so far collected be refunded to the auto rickshaw drivers.
The Forum president said that they had warned the Commissioner of going on an indefinite strike from October 1st or later if their demands were not met.
