Relatives of a patient who died due to the alleged negligence of duty doctors at
Osmania General Hospital on Saturday raised a commotion and demanded strict action against the hospital authorities.
The doctors on duty at the Acute Medical Care ward of the OGH had reportedly told the duty nurse to administer a strong dose of antibiotic to a patient, 19-year-old Ayesha Begum. The nurse injected the patient while talking on her mobile phone, without even bothering to check with the patient's family members if she had eaten anything.
According to Ghousiya Begum, the victim's sister, Ayesha Begum was administered the dose on an empty stomach, leading to her death within a few minutes.
Ayesha Begum, a resident of Kali Khabar, Chaderghat, was shifted to the OGH when she developed complications after delivering a baby about 25 days ago at the Government Maternity Hospital in Malakpet.
The doctors at the Maternity Hospital told the family to shift her to OGh, as they said they lacked necessary medical equipment there.
She was rushed to OGH and admitted to the Acute Medical Care ward early on Saturday morning with severe respiratory problems.
Ghousiya Begum alleged that the nurse was told by the duty doctor to immediately administer 'Azee 500 mg' to her sister. Her condition immediately started to deteriorate, and within 15 minutes she breathed her last.
Ghousiya Begum alleges that the family members had repeatedly alerted the duty doctors that the patient's health was deteriorating, but they brushed aside the family's pleas saying that this was normal.
By the time the doctors checked on the rapidly sinking Ayesha Begum, she was beyond help. Ghousiya Begum alleges that the duty doctor fled the scene on seeing the patient breathe her last.
Meanwhile the hospital authorities say that Ayesha Begum had developed a severe lung infection and that the dosage prescribed by the doctor was correct. They said that the post-mortem report would reveal the truth.
Charminar MLA Ahmed Pasha Quadri also visited the hospital and demanded strict action against those responsible for the death of Ayesha Begum.
