Trinamool Congress Party (TCP) made history on Friday by toppling the 34-year-old Left Front rule in West Bengal. Buddhadeb Bhattacharya will soon have to vacate the Chief Minister's office, his workplace for 11 years now.
The TCP bagged 219 of the 294 Legislative Assembly seats, while the Communist Party of India (Marxist) clinched 69 seats.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh congratulated the Union Railway Minister on her victory.
Mamata Banerjee will be sworn in as the Chief Minister of West Bengal on 18th May.
Mamata, or Didi as she is affectionately called, defeated Buddhadeb in a landslide.
"This is the victory of the people of West Bengal," stated Didi in her victory speech.
She said that she would work towards rebuilding and redeveloping the state.
The supportes of Didi gathered at the Trinamool party office campus to celebrate "the victory of democracy over Marxism". Addressing the jubiliant crowd, the leader of the masses declared that she would strive to wipe all the traces of the 3-decades-long Marxist rule in the state, and reasserted her promise to develop the education and health sectors of the state.
Meanwhile, the CPI(M) has convened an emergency meeting, and speculations are rife that Buddhadeb will formally announce his resignation after the conclusion of the high level meet.
