The death toll in last week's blast at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) has gone up to 18, with 2 of the injured officials succumbing to burn injuries on Wednesday.
The victims have been identified as VSP Deputy Manager Ch Prabhakara Rao, and Ranjan Bhattacharya, who suffered 95% burns in the explosion. THey succumbed this morning, while undergoing treatment at a corporate hospital in Mumbai.
Earlier, M B R S Sharma, an assistant general manager in the steel melting shop, died on Tuesday, while undergoing treatment at a Mumbai hospital.
The explosion had occurred at the Oxygen Control Unit near the steel melting shop II, at Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), on the night of 13 June.
Though the Andhra Pradesh government had ordered an inquiry into the explosion, a Central team - comprising former Steel Authority Of India Limited chairman S R Jain, chairman of Metallurgical And Engineering Consultants (MECON) K K Mehrotra, and the HoD of the department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Delhi - is scheduled to visit the plant on Wednesday, to probe the explosion and the causes behind the blast, and submit its report before 18 July.
