Following the Supreme Court's directions, the Maharashtra police left revolutionary writer P Varavara Rao at his residence at Gandhi Nagar in Hyderabad this morning, to be placed under house arrest.
The Maharashtra police had arrested and taken Varavara Rao to Pune two days ago as an accused in a plot being hatched to kill PM Narendra Modi. The arrests of Rao and four others had triggered widespread condemnations across the country, and the supporters of these five writers and activists approached the Supreme Court challenging the arrests. Reacting to the petition, the Supreme Court said that there was no need to jail them, and that house arrests were enough.
