Residents of the twin cities have reason to be on tenterhooks yet again, with 2 new cases of swine flu having been detected already.
The two infections, coming on the heels of a death due to the dreaded disease in Care Hospital in Visakhapatnam on Friday, seems to have shaken the district health authorities out of their lethargy.
One of the two cases was reported from the
Chest Hospital in Erragadda, while the other case was detected at
Gandhi Hospital in Musheerabad.
The dreaded disease had almost been forgotten by the health authorities and the general public in the state, since no cases were reported after September 2009.
The state had done remarkably well in controlling the spread of the disease when compared to the rest of the country, and the prolonged period of health had led to Health Department officials relaxing.
The District Medical & Health Officer Dr. Jayakumari on Saturday said that the Health Department is bracing up for another round of battle with the disease. She said that at a recent meeting of urban medical and health officers, the need of re-launching the massive awareness campaign on the disease was felt.
She added that the onset of monsoon has led to fears that the disease would spread more rapidly since the germs would survive for a longer time in the humid conditions.
