The Andhra Pradesh High Court, on Wednesday, set aside the election of TRS MLA Chennamaneni Ramesh from the Vemulawada constituency, as he is not a citizen of India and had submitted fake documents to prove his citizenship.
Ch. Ramesh, a professor in the USA, had contested and won from the Vemulawada seat in the 2010 by election. Earlier, he was with the TDP, and had resigned from the party over the Telangana issue.
The High Court's orders came following a complaint lodged with the Union Home Ministry in 2009 by a person called Adi Srinivas, alleging that Ch. Ramesh was not an Indian citizen, and sought enquiry into the allegations.
Adi Srinivas also alleged that Ramesh had submitted fake documents stating that he was in India for a year and had dual citizenship.
Ramesh was then issued a show cause notice by the Home Ministry.
However, Ramesh obtained a stay from the High Court against the enquiry. The stay was later vacated by the court, following a supplementary petition filed by Adi Srinivas.
The enquiry by the Home Ministry ruled that Ramesh is not a citizen of India. Based on these findings, the High Court, on Wednesday, set aside his election from the Vemulawada constituency. (INN)
