Popular Telugu actor Dr Rajashekar met with an accident in the wee hours of Wednesday while he was returning home from Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad.
The actor said he did not sustain injuries and escaped unhurt.
He said that he was the only one in the vehicle when the accident occurred. He got out of the car and borrowed a phone to inform the police.
"On Tuesday night, while I was returning home from Ramoji Film City via Outer Ring Road, I met with an accident at the Golkonda Appa Junction. Seeing my vehicle, passersby on the road came to me and brought me out of the vehicle. They recognized me. I borrowed a phone and informed the police, and also called up my family members. I started for my house in their car. My family members picked me up in the middle of the journey. (sic)," the actor-politician said in a statement.
Following a number of phone calls to the actor's residence about the accident, his actress wife Jeevitha told media persons that Rajasekhar left RFC at 1:30 am to return home, and that one of the tyres of the Mercedes Benz which he was driving burst resulting in the car hitting the road divider and overturning near Appa Junction. Some people coming in a car in the opposite direction saw the accident and rushed to the spot and recognized the actor. They broke open the window pane and brought him out. They also informed the police and his family, and started bringing him home.
"We immediately left for the accident spot and picked him up on the way. Later, I informed the police and gave all the details. The police verified his articles and spoke to him. Later, a doctor came to our house and examined him. The doctor said Rajasekhar had suffered just a simple injury, and left after prescribing some medicines," she added.
Rajasekhar urged the media not to make it an issue. "It is a minor accident and I am safe," he said.
The police are collecting CCTV footage and other evidence from the area to assess the reason for the accident. They are not sure if he was under the influence of alcohol. They have sought legal opinion on the issue, and a case may be filed soon.
Rajasekhar had met with an accident in 2017 as well, and had denied driving under the influence at that time.
