Telangana Finance Minister Etela Rajender today said that the formation of Telangana started to give positive results, as expected, and that the government was prioritizing people's welfare as promised during the bifurcation.
Speaking to the media, Rajender said that the State government would release waters to canals under the SRSP despite norms coming in the way.
Following an appeal from MLA B Shobha and farmers of Choppadandi in the Karimnagar district, the government had set aside norms and released 50 tmc of waters to the SRSP to irrigate crops downstream. This was not possible had Telangana been a part of united AP.
He also said that the flagship program Mission Kakatiya had helped fill up lakes, ponds and tanks with plenty of water. These replenished water bodies and reservoirs would serve as a better response to the criticism the government had received, he said.
"Our aim is to irrigate one crore acres over the next five years. Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao wants to expedite the project works," he said.
Rajender also said that along with Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao, he would visit villages in Karimnagar to examine crop yield and waters distribution channels.
