GHMC Workers To Join Telangana Strike
Health and sanitation workers in the GHMC limits will stop work, and this is bound to create serious problems for the twin cities and surrounding areas.
Health and sanitation work in the limits of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation will come to a halt from Tuesday midnight. The GHMC Bhagyanagar Employees' Union has decided to join the "Sakula Janula Samme" (the "people's general strike") and stop work from Wednesday onwards.
The Union enjoys the support of a large number of health and sanitation workers in the GHMC limits, and their participation in the strike is bound to create serious problems for the citizens of the twin cities and surrounding areas.
It may be mentioned that the Union had, earlier, assured the GHMC Commissioner M T Krishna Babu that it not would include the health and sanitation department in the general strike.
However, the Union's president Shankar, general secretary Mallikarjun and other leaders were arrested by the police on Tuesday, when they participated in the protests for Telangana. They were then taken to 7 different police stations, and finally shifted to the Malkajgiri police station in the evening.
Angered by the police action, the Union has decided to go a strike indefinitely, from Wednesday.
The Union's Additional Secretary General Vinay Kapoor said that all sanitation and health workers would participate in the strike from Wednesday. (INN)
