Telangana Adds To Parliament Din

Opposition members are protesting against the division of UP, while some members from the treasury benches are demanding a separate Telangana.
Hyderabad | 22nd November 2011
The Parliament is faced with a situation in which Opposition members are protesting against the division of Uttar Pradesh, while some members from the treasury benches are demanding a separate Telangana.

The first day of the 21-day winter session was adjourned amidst the din of vociferous protests on varied subjects from the Opposition parties.

Speakers of both the Houses had to grapple with slogan-shouting members protesting against the proposed division of UP, and against allegations against Home Minister P Chidambaram's alleged role in the telecom scandal. However, Congress MPs from Telangana were the cynosure of all eyes, for their demands were coming in from the ruling party.

Though nothing was heard in the din, Telangana MPs carried placards to register their feelings.

MPs from both the Houses held demonstrations outside the Parliament near the Gandhi statue, and raised slogans in favour of Telangana.

Soon after the session began, multiple issues were raised from the Opposition benches, and both Houses were adjourned without transacting any business.

In Lok Sabha, when the question hour was taken up, SP and BJP members from UP created a ruckus on UP's proposed division, as a resolution to this effect was passed in the UP Assembly. Congress members from Telangana used their lung power to demand a separate state.

The Speaker adjourned the House till noon, and when the situation did not improve even after it re-assembled, the House was adjourned for the day.

The Upper House was adjourned immediately after making obituary remarks.

This must be the first time in the history of Parliament that protests have come in from the treasury benches.

The situation has put parties in contradictory positions. The BJP, which claims it has created new states during the NDA rule, is supporting Telangana on one hand and opposing the division of Uttar Pradesh on the other.

The TDP, the main Opposition party in AOP, has lost control on its cadre, and at no point of time has it spelt out its stand clearly.

Of the Left, the CPI, which expelled MLA D China Malliah for raising the Telangana bogey, is now in favour of a separate state, while the CPM says that it stands for a united Andhra Pradesh.

And the Congress itself is on a sticky wicket, as it faces revolt from within and has rebels shouting slogans out in the open. (INN)
