The Telangana High Court today heard the sensational case of the death of Mariamma in the Addagudur police station in Yadadri district.
The court reserved its verdict after hearing both sides.
The court had on November 10 felt that the case was fit to be transferred to the CBI. However, representing the government, Advocate General (AG) Prasad said that the government was ready to hand over the case to the CID instead of the CBI.
He appealed to the High Court to not to transfer the case to the CBI as it would belittle the Telangana police and hurt their morale. The people would lose their confidence in the police department, he said. The police were anyway following the directions of the Human Rights Commission, he claimed, and added that the government had also removed an SI and two constables related to the case.
The AG also said that the government would follow the court's guidelines on the investigation.
The court heard both sides of the case, and got the details of the post mortem, the compensation paid and the action taken against the police officials involved in the case.
The court also slammed the police for killing Mariamma in jail - as per a second post mortem report she died only after the police caning her - and said that her life could not be brought back through compensation.
